Three unbranded infant car seat carriers on a living room floor (illustrative)
Illustrative image.

The infant seat is the one you carry: from the car to the stroller, into the house, onto a restaurant chair. So the numbers that matter most are the child limits, the carrier weight and how the base locks in. The Nuna PIPA rx has the lightest carrier, the UPPAbaby Mesa Max has the most base features, and the Chicco KeyFit 35 is the narrowest and fits the most strollers from its own brand.

The picks

01

★Lightest carrier

NunaPIPA rx

Best for: Lightest carrier and taxi use without a base

A 7.6 lb rear-facing infant seat (US page: 4 to 30 lb, 16 to 30 in) with a reclining RELX base, a steel load leg and baseless belt install.

What we like

  • Lightest carrier here
  • Load leg on the RELX base
  • Belt install without a base for taxis
  • FAA certified for aircraft

Watch out for

  • Lowest weight and height limits of the three
  • Best stroller match is within the Nuna range

At 7.6 lb without its canopy and inserts, the PIPA rx carrier is about 2 lb lighter than the other two. Nuna adds roughly 1 lb with the canopy and inserts on. The RELX base has a steel load leg, rigid LATCH connectors and a 4-position recline you can change after install. You can also belt it in without the base, which helps with taxis and rideshares. The trade-off: the US page lists 30 lb and 30 in, lower than the 35 lb and 32 in on the other two, so some babies will outgrow it sooner.

02

★Most base features

UPPAbabyMesa Max

Best for: UPPAbaby Vista and Cruz owners who want a load leg

A rear-facing infant seat rated 4 to 35 lb and up to 32 in, with a 9.9 lb carrier, a load leg, an Anti-Rebound+ panel and an infinite-adjust headrest.

What we like

  • Load leg and Anti-Rebound+ panel on the base
  • Clicks onto Vista and Cruz with no adapter
  • One-handed infinite headrest adjust

Watch out for

  • Adapters needed for Minu and Ridge
  • UPPAbaby does not list a width on its comparison sheet

The Mesa Max base has both a load leg and an Anti-Rebound+ panel, plus a red-to-green SmartSecure indicator that shows when the LATCH connectors are locked. The headrest adjusts one-handed with no fixed steps, and the canopy is UPF 25+. UPPAbaby says the seat has no added fire-retardant chemicals and carries GREENGUARD Gold certification. It clicks straight onto the Vista V3 and Cruz V3. The Minu and Ridge need adapters.

03

★Narrowest

ChiccoKeyFit 35

Best for: Chicco stroller owners and the narrowest carrier

A rear-facing infant seat rated 4 to 35 lb and up to 32 in, with a 10 lb carrier, a 16.5 in width and an anti-rebound bar.

What we like

  • Narrowest listed width here (16.5 in)
  • Fits all Chicco strollers except the Liteway
  • Anti-rebound bar and 5-position headrest

Watch out for

  • No load leg listed
  • Carrier is 2.4 lb heavier than the PIPA rx

Chicco lists the KeyFit 35 at 16.5 in wide, the narrowest of the three. It is rated 4 to 35 lb and up to 32 in, with a newborn positioner for 4 to 11 lb. The base has six recline positions, a SuperCinch LATCH tightener and a LockSure belt lock, plus an anti-rebound bar. Chicco says it fits every Chicco stroller except the Liteway. There is no load leg.

Frequently asked questions

How long can my baby use an infant car seat?

Until they reach the seat's weight or height limit, whichever comes first. The KeyFit 35 and Mesa Max are rated to 35 lb and 32 in. The US PIPA rx page lists 30 lb and 30 in. NHTSA says to keep children rear-facing as long as possible, so many families move to a rear-facing convertible seat next.

What does a load leg do?

A load leg is a support that runs from the base down to the vehicle floor. The Nuna RELX base and the Mesa Max base both have one. Chicco does not list one for the KeyFit 35, which uses an anti-rebound bar instead.

Can I use these in a taxi without the base?

Nuna lists a baseless belt install for the PIPA rx. Read your seat's manual before any baseless install, because belt routing differs between seats.

Can I take an infant car seat on a plane?

Nuna and UPPAbaby list FAA certification for the PIPA rx and Mesa Max. Look for the aircraft certification sticker on any seat before you fly.
